Food and emotion
December 13th, 2006
I have always found comfort in food. Until recently I did not realize that my correlation between food and comfort stems from my mom. I love my mom, BUT…
My mom is a very skinny woman who doesn’t gain weight no matter what. Her stomach is too small for her to get overstuffed like this generation. I think the problem is the mechanism to stop eating when your full somehow broke after the yuppy generation. GenXers and GenYers see to be missing something in the chromosomal DNA that triggers the stop reaction.
When I am feeling sad I eat. I eat because my happy times are associated with food. Food that is familiar and comforting triggers the same sensory feelings as a good conversation or a hug. When a hug is lacking or a day has gone badly that Haegen-Daas Heath Bar looks really really good.
Why is that? I don’t know. If anybody has any thoughts let me know. This entry is really a stream of consciousness to keep me away from my freezer which is filled with frozen peach yogurt and strawberry bars.
